No money, no honey?

I have a different version:

No marketing, no money.

Because every single dollar you earn in your business ultimately comes from marketing.

You can have the best product.

The best service.

The best team.

The best website.

The best vision in the world.

But if nobody knows you exist, none of it matters.

And sometimes we massively overcomplicate what marketing actually is.

When I first arrived in Australia from the UK, I had no money, no friends, no clients, no business and I didn’t even have a mobile phone.

But I still had rent to pay.

So I had to figure out one very important question:

Where are the people who could potentially pay me?

At the time, I wanted corporate training contracts.

So I searched for conferences happening in Perth where my ideal corporate clients would all be gathered together.

And I found one.

Small problem.

The ticket was about $3,000.

I didn’t have $3,000.

I didn’t even have a car to get there.

Then, on one of my walks, I found an abandoned bicycle during verge collection.

Transportation problem solved.

So there I was, in a business suit, cycling up the Kwinana Freeway to this conference.

Which, for the record, I later discovered you’re absolutely not supposed to do.

Then I arrived and discovered problem number two.

I still didn’t have a ticket.

Eventually, someone leaving the conference handed me their lanyard.

His name was Pete.

So for the next two days…

I was Pete.

I walked into that conference, introduced myself to absolutely everyone I could and walked out with 302 business cards.

Within six weeks, that activity generated my first six-figure contract.

Two months later, that turned into my first seven-figure contract.

Now, I’m NOT recommending stealing conference lanyards, hacking your neighbour’s Wi-Fi or cycling illegally down freeways.

But I AM asking you this:

Where are your customers already hanging out?

What conferences are they attending?

What networking groups are they joining?

What associations are they members of?

What Facebook or LinkedIn groups are they participating in?

What events are they going to?

What podcasts are they listening to?

Where are they already gathered together?

Marketing doesn’t always require an enormous advertising budget.

Sometimes you simply need to go where your people already are and introduce yourself.

And then there’s the second part…

Every piece of marketing needs a call to action.

Don’t just get seen.

Give people somewhere to GO.

Ask them to:

• Join your email list
• Download your free resource
• Book a call
• Register for your webinar
• Visit your website
• Follow you
• Send you a message
• Buy something

Visibility without a next step is a massive wasted opportunity.

So here’s your challenge:

Find ONE place this week where your ideal customers are already gathering.

Get yourself in front of them.

Introduce yourself.

Help them.

Give them a reason to stay connected with you.

Because your next massive opportunity might not require more money.

It might simply require you to get off your bum and go where the people are.
