Imagine asking AI to review your inbox, find information, prepare replies and help you stay organised.

That is possible—but before connecting AI to your business email, you need to understand the permissions you’re granting.

Here’s how to connect Claude Cowork to your inbox more safely.

1️⃣ Use the Claude Desktop App

Open the actual Claude desktop application—not Claude inside your web browser and not your email browser.

Go to:

Customise → Connectors

This is where you can connect the email service provider your business uses.

2️⃣ Add Your Email Provider

Select Add, browse the available connectors and search for your provider.

For example:

✨ Gmail
✨ Outlook

Select your provider, log in to your account and complete the connection process.

3️⃣ Review Every Permission

Once connected, check exactly what Claude is allowed to access and do.

This is your business.

It’s your data.

And it’s your responsibility to make informed decisions about your cybersecurity and AI access.

Don’t blindly switch everything on.

4️⃣ Understand Read-Only Access

Read-only access means the AI can view information but cannot change or delete it.

This may allow Claude to:

✨ Search your inbox
✨ Review email history
✨ Find important information
✨ Summarise conversations
✨ Help prepare responses

You remain in control of any action taken.

5️⃣ Require Approval for Actions

Write and delete permissions are different because they allow AI to take action inside your account.

I personally set these functions to Needs Approval.

This means Claude must ask me before it sends, changes or deletes anything—and I manually approve or reject the action.

AI should not be deleting emails or taking important business actions without your knowledge.

Connect your account.

Choose your permissions carefully.

Keep human approval in place for important actions.

Then let AI help you reduce inbox admin without giving away unnecessary control.
