JARGON ALERT! What Is The Difference Between a Domain A-Record, Subdomain, Web Pages, Slugs and Redirects?

The online, website techy stuff can be pretty confusing when you are just getting started; and as the CEO of the all-in-one business platform Tekmatix, I am often asked to explain what all of the website lingo means…

So in this video I explain the difference between the following:

• a web domain
• a subdomain
• a web page
• a web page slug (also called a path)
• a website/url redirect

Let’s get techy (as simple as possible!)…

Domain (A-Record):

At the very top of your website hierarchy is the domain itself. This is your website address. Eg, one of mine is: www.sarahcordiner.com.

This is your unique address on the web, and you purchase it from domain registrars like GoDaddy, CrazyDomains, Namecheap Square, etc.

The A-record is a setting within your domain’s DNS (Domain Name System) that links your domain to a specific IP address, essentially pointing your domain to your web server.

In short, the ‘a record’ is the primary web URL that your website lives on.

Subdomain:

A subdomain is like a subcategory within your main domain.

For example, courses.sarahcordiner.com is a subdomain of SarahCordiner.com.

It is often used to separate different areas of your operations, such as online courses (which might live on a different portal, but still run from your domain).

Creating a subdomain can be done in the DNS settings of your domain registrar.

Web Pages and Slugs:

Within your domain and subdomains, you have individual web pages, each with its own unique URL.

For instance, sarahcordiner.com/home takes you to the homepage, while http://sarahcordiner.com/contact leads to the contact page.

The part of the URL after the forward slash (/) is called the slug (also called path).

It identifies specific pages and helps users navigate directly to the content they need.

Redirects:

Redirects are incredibly useful for branding and managing your online traffic.

A redirect forwards one URL to another, or creates more memorable and prettier links under your domain.
