This is the biggest gold rush since the internet started – and business owners who jump on this are about to cash in BIG TIME…  What is it??! 

….ChatGPT just announced that ADVERTISING is coming to ChatGPT.

And this shizz is WAY more ‘freaky’ than Facebook somehow knowing that you’ve got bum warts and advertising Terrasil in your feed…..

That’s old school marketing…..  

NOW we are about to see AI deliver ads that are tailored based on the actual secrets that everyone is spilling into their ChatGPT conversations! 

This is NOT business as usual.

This is the biggest opportunity for business owners that we’ve seen since AI became mainstream…. Well – ONLY for the ones who jump on board the early AI-Advertising train.

What’s happening right now is a fundamental shift in how people discover, evaluate, and decide to buy.

And the businesses that prepare early will benefit disproportionately – just like the early advertisers on Facebook back in 2007, and created a global wave of new millionaires.

THIS is gonna be WAY bigger than that ever was.

So what did OpenAI Actually Announce?

Here’s what we know so far based on public announcements from OpenAI and early reporting.

ChatGPT ads are being rolled out to free and lower-tier users.
They appear inside conversations, clearly labelled as sponsored.
Paid Plus and Pro users won’t see them.

That means ads are being shown inside an answer environment, not a scrolling feed.

And this matters.

Because ChatGPT now has hundreds of millions of active users globally.
Industry analysts estimate ad revenue could exceed $1 billion USD as early as 2026, with long-term projections far higher as the platform matures.

This is OpenAI signalling that advertising inside AI conversations is not an experiment.
It’s a strategy.

SO – How Is This Is Different to Other Paid Ads Like Google & Facebook Ads?

Glad you asked. 

Let’s talk about why this changes everything.

Google Ads are keyword-based.
Facebook Ads are interruption-based

And ALL traditional paid ads depend on the marketer ‘GUESSING’ and assuming who the target audience might be, and ONLY targeting those demographics and interests.

ChatGPT ads however, are real problem-based, intent-based and conversational.

By the time an ad is shown, the AI already understands:

  • what the person is trying to solve
  • their constraints
  • their preferences and interests
  • Their current level of knowledge
  • what they’ve already ruled out..
  • Aaaaannddd… all of their secret frustrations from their entire history of chats

Now THAT is power-advertising.

This means the ad isn’t guessing.

It’s being placed after context has been established based on actual conversations, content, data and personal information that they’ve shared with AI.

This is what marketers are calling the shift from a hot-and-miss style ‘link-based economy’, to a highly targeted ‘answer-based economy’.

OK – What Are The Conversion Rates of ChatGPT Ads?

Now, this is why marketers are literally foaming at he mouth with excitement about this new revolution of advertising….

Early industry analysis, including research shared by Ahrefs, has shown that AI-assisted and conversational ad referrals convert significantly higher than traditional cold traffic ads.

Some early reports suggest conversion rates at 23%+ from AI-powered ads, compared to around 1% in traditional ads.  That is bigger than Ben Hurr and Godzilla put together.

And it’s not because the ad is better; …but because the context is better.

The user isn’t clicking blind mid-doom scroll.
They’ve been served a highly personal ad based on what they’ve been privately chatting to ChatGPT about.

And here’s the most  WILD part that EVERY business owner MUST start preparing for RIGHT NOW….

👉 Users can ask ChatGPT questions about the AD!!!

Think about that.

Instead of bouncing off a sales page, they stay inside the conversation and ask:

  • Is this right for me?
  • How does this compare to similar offers out there?
  • What if I’m not technical?
  • Is this good for my type of business?
  • Is there a refund policy if I don’t like it?

AI is either going to become your 24-hour sales guy sending you unlimited free leads, or it’s going to ghost you and refer your competitor instead.

Which leads to the next critical point…..

Your General Content and Sales Page Copy Matter More Than Ever

I have been screaming and advocating for the importance of creating how-to content for over a decade now, as this is how traditionally Google algorithms have sent traffic to marketers and now it’s how AI is sending traffic to marketers. 

If you don’t have how-to educational-based content that answers common questions in your field, you have absolutely nothing for SEO or AEO to be able to find and send people to. 

And now that ads are coming along in the AI LLMs, if you don’t have this how-to style of writing both in your sales page copy and in your content, then your ad performance will flop too – because now ads are about conversations, not just simple targeting. 

ChatGPT can only answer questions based on what exists.

If your:

  • how-to content is thin
  • FAQs are missing on your sales pages
  • Explanations, details, deliverables and learning outcomes are vague
  • or your sales pages are all hype and no explicit clarity on the results, inclusions and exclusions

…the AI has nothing solid to reference or promote in the Chat threads.

Which means no leads and no sales for you.

This is why educational content is no longer optional marketing.

Your blogs, videos, help guides, FAQs, comparisons, and explanations are becoming AI training material by default.

Sales pages especially need:

  • Deep, detailed and objection-based FAQs at the bottom
  • objection handling written clearly as explicit ‘Q&A’ style
  • “who this is for and who it’s not for” clarity

Because when someone asks ChatGPT  “Is this actually suitable for me?”, the AI cannot handle the objection and attempt to sell for you if it doesn’t have any of that information to pull from. 

The Early Mover Advantage (And Why Waiting Is Expensive)

We’ve seen this cycle before.

Google Ads.
Facebook Ads.
Instagram Ads.

Early adopters benefited from:

  • lower costs
  • less competition
  • faster learning curves
  • and long-term positioning as experts

Late adopters paid more for worse results.

ChatGPT ads will follow the same pattern.

But this time, the advantage doesn’t just go to advertisers.

It goes to businesses that:

  • understand AI-driven discovery
  • build content ecosystems, not campaigns
  • and structure their marketing for conversation, not clicks

This is not about chasing shiny objects.

It’s about aligning your business with how people now ask for help.

So How Can You Prepare For ChatGPT Ads? 

  1. Audit your content
    Do you actually answer the questions your buyers ask in natural language queries?
  2. Upgrade your sales pages
    Add real FAQs. Real explanations. Real clarity.
  3. Understand AI-led marketing
    Not just prompts. Systems. Strategy. Structure… and how SEO vs AEO and AI Referrals actually work.
  4. Prepare your funnels
    Because AI traffic behaves differently to cold ads.

This is not about fear.
It’s about readiness.

What Are The Details of ChatGPT Ads?

As of late January 2026, ChatGPT ads are not yet available for everyone.

They are currently initial testing phase in the United States only (I am publishing this on 20th Jan 2026).

OpenAI announced on January 16th 2026, that it would begin testing advertisements for users on its free tier and the new $8 per month ‘ChatGPT Go’ tier in the US in the coming weeks. 

(Here’s me crying in Australia, because we always get all the fun stuff last!).

Here is the breakdown of the current situation:

Who will see ChatGPT ads? Only free-tier and ChatGPT Go adult users in the US..

Will All ChatGPT Accounts See Ads?: No. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscription accounts will remain ad-free. Only the free and ‘Go’ ChatGPT plans will be served ads at the moment. 

Where Will ChatGPT Ads Appear?: Ads are expected to appear at the bottom of ChatGPT responses when relevant, such as in response to shopping or planning queries.

What Are The Privacy Concerns With ChatGPT ADs?: OpenAI has stated that ads will be clearly labeled, will not influence the answers the model gives, and that user conversation data will not be shared with advertisers.

Are There Ad Restrictions in ChatGPT Ads?: Ads will not appear in conversations regarding sensitive topics like health, mental health, or politics.

What Control Will Users Have Around ChatGPT Ads? Users will have the option to opt out of personalised ads. 

When Will Everyone Get Access To ChatGPT Ads?

OpenAI has not yet confirmed any exact dates or timelines at the time of publishing this and just said it will be rolling out to other countries ‘soon’.
